A gristmill was built here in 1690. The town was established on 60 acres given by John Graham, who named it for his birthplace in Scotland, and it was chartered on May 11, 1749. For about 15 years it was a thriving tobacco port. The Revolutionary War, silting of the harbor and a shift in shipping crops ended the port’s heyday. Alexander Henderson built the Henderson House, which still stands on a hill in town.
