About Fredericksburg

The Fredericksburg mailing addresses with ZIP codes 22405 through 22408 wrap around the City of Fredericksburg on both sides of the Rappahannock River. According to the City of Fredericksburg, 22405 and 22406 are in Stafford County, and 22407 and 22408 are in Spotsylvania County. That matters, because the county you are in decides your utilities, your trash options and a lot of everyday details.

These are some of the busiest and fastest-growing parts of the region. Stafford County added about 14,000 people between the 2020 Census and 2025, and Spotsylvania County about 15,000. If you are not sure which side an address falls on, I can tell you in a minute.

What people like most about Fredericksburg

What Fredericksburg offers

The University of Mary Washington, Mary Washington Healthcare and GEICO are among the major employers in the Fredericksburg area, and the historic downtown draws about 1.5 million visitors a year. Many neighbors also commute north on I-95 and Route 1 to the Quantico area and Northern Virginia.

A little history

Fredericksburg was declared a port in 1728 and named for Frederick, Prince of Wales. George Washington’s family moved to Ferry Farm, just across the river in what is now Stafford County, in 1738, and his mother, Mary, later moved into the city. The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought here in December 1862. The town became an independent city in 1879, which is why the surrounding land still belongs to Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.
